Fizzie Fresh! (the multi-purpose toilet bomb)

I have seen many posts about toilet bombs on other blogs and really wanted to try a recipe of my own that would not only work on keeping my toilet bowl fresh and clean, but could also be used in other areas of the home.  I am pleased with the results and want to share my process so you can try them for yourself  :)
One of my favorite blogs is One Good Thing by Jillee.   Jillee’s toilet  bomb recipe can be found HERE.
Another recipe I looked at carefully was at Maria’s Self, but I particularly liked the addition of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide used in the recipe at Popsugar.com.   After reading through the ingredients and methods used in these 3 recipes I came up with this recipe to try:

Fizzie Fresh Recipe

Materials Needed
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • ½ teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide
  • 15 peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil
  • Low-sided pan or cookie sheet covered with press & seal wrap
  • Small glass mixing bowl
  • Small cup for mixing liquids together
  • Wooden spoon and fork for mixing
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small spray bottle with 50/50 vinegar/water mix
Instructions
Line your pans or baking sheets with press & seal wrap (sticky side down). I chose to use the press & seal in particular so that the liner wouldn’t slide around when I was putting the discs onto it.
  • Add the baking soda to mixing bowl. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and cleaner
  • Add the citric acid to the baking soda and stir well with wooden spoon. Citric Acid is what helps to add the fizz.
  • Put vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in a small cup. These 2 ingredients will work together to help clean the toilet bowl.
  • Add the liquids ¼ teaspoon at a time to the baking soda/citric acid mixture, gently stirring after each addition.  If too much fizzing is going on (due to the chemical reactions of the citric acid/liquid as well as the baking soda/vinegar) add even less liquid at a time. I believe it was Jillee’s method that called for adding the liquid to a spray bottle and spraying it onto the dry mixture a little at a time. I may try this method next time!
  • Gently stir in your essential oil then use a one-half teaspoon to mold the mixture into small half rounds. I used the point of a butter knife to encourage the discs to come out of the spoon and onto the pan.
  • Using your spray bottle, lightly spray each mound with the vinegar and water mixture. This will create a crust that will help hold the dried fizzies together and prevent crumbling. Don’t spray too much! Let dry for at least six hours or overnight.

I put the completely dried fizzies into one of my favorite jars for using in the main bathroom.  I filled a smaller jar for the purpose of making a pretty picture.  Make sure that you use an airtight container for storing to keep them fresh.  This recipe produced about 75 little fizzies so I plan to store the extras in a zipper bag and add them to my jar as needed.  I'm thinking that I ended up with so many because I did not pack the mixture tightly enough into the spoon before putting on tray to dry.  I believe the little bombs would probably last (fizz) longer if I had made them more dense.

How To Use:
Simply drop one Fizzie Fresh into your toilet bowl after a flush to help kill odor causing bacteria and keep the bowl fresh.

You may want to also try these other possible uses for your fizzies:
  • Set one out in the open to freshen a room.
  • Use to clean your nails when they get grimy from gardening or other messy tasks.
  • Put one in your dishwasher for an extra           boost of cleaning for your dishes.
  • Add to a load of towels in your washing machine to freshen and superclean.
  • Rub a disk directly on stubborn stains in your shower/bathtub/sink.
  • Set a disk in your sink strainer to freshen and clean your drains.

Here is where I purchased ingredients for the above recipe

Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar can be purchased in any grocery store.
I buy my baking soda at Walmart because they have the larger sizes and I use a LOT of baking soda. It has so many handy uses!

The Citric Acid was a gift from a friend  For future recipes I will get it online here:
Citric Acid Powder - Ultra Fine Pure Powdered Crystals - Natural Preservative Food Grade Quality (16 oz)

The Peppermint essential oil came from youngliving.com

I purchased the Edens Garden lemon essential oil here:
Lemon 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil by Edens Garden- 10 ml

I hope that you will either try this recipe or one of your own and let me know how you like it.
Thanks again for visiting :)
